John M. Murphy

John Michael Murphy (born August 3, 1926) is a former Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York.[1]

He was born in Staten Island, New York City, New York and attended La Salle Military Academy, Amherst College, and the United States Military Academy in West Point.[1]

He served in the U.S. Army from August 1944 to July 1956, first as an enlisted man then after four years at West Point, receiving his commission. During his military years he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Bronze Star, and was discharged as a Captain.[1]

He was elected as a Democrat to the 88th U.S. Congress and to the eight succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1963-January 3, 1981);[1] he ran unsuccessfully for re-election in 1980 after being indicted in the Abscam bribery scandal.[2]

His son, Mark Murphy, is a real-estate developer and aide to New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio.[3]
